Arthroscopic ACL surgery is a minimally invasive procedure meant to recreate the anterior cruciate ligament in patient with ACL deficient knees. The procedure is performed arthroscopically through tiny cuts made around the knee joint. In cases of acute tears especially when the ligament gets detached from its attachment site over the bone, it is repaired (ACL repair) with the help of sutures and metallic implants such as buttons or screws. Your surgeon may augment the repair with strong suture called internal brace. In case of chronic tears, your surgeon will reconstruct the ligament (ACL reconstruction) with a tendon graft harvested from your own body. Multiple graft options are available as hamstring tendon, quadriceps tendon, bone patellar tendon bone graft, peroneus tendon. The surgeon will decide the graft option based on your functional demand. Based on the chronicity and status of laxity of you knee joint, you may have another procedure to further stabilize your knee by reconstructing the restraint on the outer aspect of the joint (ALL reconstruction) using another tendon called ilio-tibial band (lateral tenodesis). Following the procedure, you will be guided through the physical therapy. You are expected to get back to normal routine in about two to three months and return to sports in six to nine months. Occasionally, the reconstructed ACL tear again with the injury when you may be considered for revision surgery (revision ACL reconstruction) either in one stage or two stage when you will be undergoing similar procedure using a different graft option.
