Open reduction internal fixation is a procedure used to stabilize broken bones (fractures) and facilitate healing. It is carried out using synthetic implants such as screws, plates, nail, or sutures. Fixation of a fracture of the collar bone (clavicle fracture) commonly involves using a plate and screws, and occasionally suspensory devices (suture). It usually takes about three months for fracture healing. You will be allowed to move the joint soon after the surgery. Subsequently, you will be given physiotherapy to gradually gain movement and build strength of the shoulder and arm. In the case of old fractures (non-union), your surgeon may take bone from another part of your body and transfer it to the fracture site (bone graft) to augment healing.
