Sterno-clavicular joint procedures (Excision or Reconstruction)

Sterno-clavicular joint excision or excision of medial end of the clavicle is undertaken for arthritis involving the sterno-clavicular joint.  A portion of bone (5-10 mm) is excised from the medial end of collar bone through an open incision.

The sterno-clavicular joint reconstruction is performed as an open procedure to treat instability or recurrent dislocation of sterno-clavicular joint.  Your surgeon will harvest a tendon from a different part of your body, preferably from the leg, and secure it in a ‘figure of eight’ fashion around the sterno-clavicular joint to stabilize it.
