Abnormal alignment of the leg i.e., bowlegs (genu varus) or knock knees (genu valgus) instead of a straight leg can cause overloading and subsequent early degeneration of a part of the joint leading to symptoms of arthritis including pain, swelling, inability to take part in physical activities e.g., running, jogging, sports etc.
In young patients, osteotomy surgery to correct this problem can be often very helpful in relieving the symptoms and restoring full painless function of the knee.
Osteotomy surgery is however not suitable for every patient with arthritis. Careful and detailed patient assessment is needed to check for suitability. Then, a lot of work goes into meticulous planning and execution of the procedure.
Your knee surgeons at OSS are fellowship trained Osteotomy surgeons who have years of experience in such procedures and can provide world class treatment for patients needing these procedures.
During this procedure, your surgeon will perform a preliminary arthroscopic assessment of the knee to assess the suitability of the procedure and then, make an incision over upper leg, remove a wedge of bone from the upper part of shin bone (tibia), re-fix using metal implants. Following the procedure, you will be given protected weight bearing and supervised physiotherapy with full return to activity at around three months.
