Osteochondral allograft transplant is in principle similar to autograft osteochondral transplant, however in this procedure, the graft is obtained from another human donor. It’s benefits and advantages over autograft are:
- Large defects can be covered where autograft quantity may not be sufficient
- No donor site morbidity
The graft is harvested from the knee of a X ray matched human donor which has undergone thorough testing and preparation for transplant. During the surgery, following initial arthroscopic assessment, the appropriate size graft is transplanted in the patient to cover the cartilage defect in their knee. Your surgeon may use a metallic implant to secure the graft in its position. The allograft is expected to heal with your bone in few months. Initially you will be advised protected weight bearing with gradual return to full weight bearing in few weeks.
