Total knee replacement

Total knee replacement is commonly performed procedure for end-stage knee arthritis. During the procedure, your specialist will remove the damaged bone and cartilage from the joint surfaces (femur, tibia and patella) and replace with metal and plastic implant. This may involve the replacement of undersurface of the patella with plastic implant (patelloplasty). The implant is fixed with the bone with special material called cement. Following the procedure, you will be allowed to walk with support from the same day with the help of physical therapist. In patients with complex deformity in the joint, your specialist may choose to add additional metal implants or augments (stem or sleeve or cones) for support (Complex primary knee replacement). In case of failed total knee replacement, or when complication happen, you may need to undergo a revision total knee replacement. This usually need removal of previous implants and re-implantation of newer implants with usage of additional support in form of metal augments, either in one or two stages.
