Trochleoplasty is a procedure designed to improve the shape of the lower part of the thigh bone (femoral trochlea) where it makes articulation with the kneecap (patella). It is indicated in patients with recurrent patellar dislocation or patellar instability especially where the trochlea is misshapen. In this procedure, your surgeon will perform initial arthroscopic assessment, followed by an open procedure where he will lift the cartilage from the trochlea, re-shape the trochlea, secure the cartilage back with the help of sutures or anchors. You might have another bony or soft tissue realignment procedures such as osteotomy or ligament reconstruction as concomitant procedures, if necessary.
