Fusion or arthrodesis of the shoulder joint is performed for patients suffering with paralysis of the nerves controlling the shoulder joint,  infection, or following failed replacement surgery. Here, the top part of the arm bone (humeral head) is fused to the parts of shoulder blade (glenoid and acromion) using a metal plate and screws through an open incision in the front of the shoulder.
