SLAP tear

The labrum is a tough tissue lining the glenoid which contributes to the stability to the shoulder joint. It provides attachment for the biceps tendon superiorly. A tear in the labrum around the biceps anchor is called a Superior Labrum Anterior to Posterior (SLAP) tear. This commonly occurs in athletes who perform overhead motions e.g. cricket bowlers or tennis players, also in people involved with overhead work.

This can cause pain or a popping sensation, and reduces the performance of sports persons. A MRI scan will be needed to diagnose this condition. You will be treated with physical therapy and activity modification initially. Nonresolution of symptoms may lead your surgeon to advise an arthroscopic repair of SLAP tear or biceps tenodesis.
