The elbow dislocation is a serious injury of the elbow joint. The elbow joint can dislocate as a result of high energy trauma such as motor vehicle accidents. It can be a simple dislocation with ligament tear without bony fracture or a complex fracture dislocation involving fracture around the elbow. Terrible triad is a type of fracture dislocation with tear in one of the ligament (lateral collateral ligamenttear) and fracture in one of the bone (radial head fracture). It causes pain, swelling and deformity of the joint. You will need an urgent reduction of the dislocation and immobilization in a plaster splint. In case of simple dislocation, you will be advised physical therapy after one week of immobilization. In a complex fracture dislocation, your surgeon will recommend CT scan followed by surgical fixation of the fracture and ligament repair.
